Sustainable cities

In 2004 UTC launched its Sustainable Cities initiative supporting the development and use of green building practices in urban centers, creating new programs to educate the public about the need for more healthful environments, and protecting natural resources.

Under this program, UTC awarded grants to national and Connecticut-based programs in 2004 including:

  • The National Trust for Historic Preservation to help apply green building principles to historic preservation at the President Lincoln and Soldiers' Home in Washington, D.C.
  • Habitat for Humanity NYC/Global Green USA for the Green Building and Environment Justice conference to train representatives of the regional Habitat affiliates in the best practices of green building.
  • The Trust for Public Land, Middletown, Conn. to support a comprehensive approach to protecting the Connecticut River watershed.
  • Earth Pledge to fund a study to explore the possibility of developing an anaerobic digester that would break compost materials down to methane gas to power a fuel cell at a university.
